Sea of Dreams – Allan Thomas

“I had been working on this piece of music off and on for around a year but felt something was missing. My longtime guitarist and songwriting buddy Bryan Kessler flew over from Oahu and helped me with a few cool chords and that seemed to do the trick. We then went to my studio and recorded my acoustic guitar part, then his nylon string melody guitar followed by his electric fills guitar parts.

Next, as usual, we had the great Michael Ruff add his tasty keyboard parts and followed up with the ever amazing Jimmy Johnson on bass. Now all we needed was drums, and we employed the services of one of my favorite drummers in the whole wide world, Keith Carlock to add his gorgeous drum parts. Afterwards we sat back in amazement at the tracks’ groovaciousness.

As usual Bryan and I never know what genre our original compositions fall into. Is it rock? Is it jazz? Is it folk? Is it americana? So one of us thought maybe it’s new age?! I joked back to Bryan no, let’s label it ‘old age’! We laughed our asses off having come up with a fitting new genre of music.

I always mix the song as its moving along in its process so by the time the song is finished its pretty dang close to being mixed. But for the last 2 albums and several singles I would send the songs to my long time buddy Paul Northfield (Rush) for the final mix, to add his little but major touches of magic stardust. He never disappoints and the song was finished. Bryan and I were stoked to say the least. But what to call it?

The song sat in the single release cue for months ’til I finally came up with a title, going through numerous titles along the way till I finally found it. I dream almost every single night, all kinds of dreams. Sometimes I dream about the ocean and the waves. As I spend an inordinate amount of time windsurfing and surfing here on Kauai I thought I’ll call it ‘Sea Of Dreams’ and that title felt perfect as the song flows along with some nice dynamics enveloping it.”
